About Us



Varmakalai Gurukulam is an academy which teaches valuable ancient tamilar martial arts like Silambam, Kuthu Varusai and Varmakalai. Our team of expert trainers has over 15 years of experience in teaching martial arts. We conduct regular classes and seminars.

Asan Swaminathan, a practitioner of Silambam, Kuttuvarisai and Varmakalai for the past 25 years. He has learned 3 different styles in Silambam. They are Naga Pasanam, Kalla Puthu and Kuravanji. He has also mastered Thanjavur Kuthu Varisai and Varmakalai. He has spread his hands in research and comparative study in 13 different regional styles of Silambam such as Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Salem and so on.
He started practicing martial arts at the age of 8 and attained the title ‘Sattam Pillai’ (Assistant Instructor) at the age of 14. And he attained the title of ‘ASAN’ at the age of 21. Some of his masters are,
1) Asan Rajendren

  • Practitioner of Kalari, Silambam, Kuthu varisai and varmakalai for the past 50 years.
Special Mention
  • A therapist and has done herbal research throughout his lifetime.
  • One of the few masters in the world who has specialized in activating the Varma points (pressure points) without touching them which could be referred as ‘Mei thienda kalam’ or ‘Nooku varmam’.
2) Asan Mohan M.D, Pollachi
Skills:
  • Practitioner of Silambam, Kuttu varisai and varmakalai for the past 40 years.
Achievements:
  • An expert therapist who has also involved himself in curing various psychic problems.
3) Asan Alexander, Nagercoil
Skills:
  • Teaching Kalari, Silambam, Kuttu varisai and varmakalai for the past 60 years.
Special Mention:
  • He has researched in Varmakalai and Sidda Vaithiaym using the Oolai Chuvadu for the past 55 years.
4) Asan Silampoli Rathna Kumar, Salem
Skills:
  • Practitioner of Silambam, Kuttu varisai and varmakalai for the past 40 years.
Achievements/Special Mention
  • He is the pioneer in introducing teaching Silambam through different channels of communication.
Initially Asan Swaminathan started taking class under the guidance of Asan Rajendran and Asan Amul Das. Then he started his own school called “VARMAKALAI GURUKULAM” at the age of 24. He has branches in various districts like Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and Salem. And he is also running his school in Chennai for the past 4 years.
He has published a book called “Varmathiravu” in 1997. This book gives ample amount of information regarding Varmakalai, its divisions, weapons used, etc.
He was one of the prominent persons in starting “Tamilnadu Kuttuvarisai Federation” in 1999, where he also rendered his services as a Secretary for Kumbakonam district during 2003 -2005. Due to heavy work load in his profession combined with his never dying interest to spread the martial arts, he decided to step down from the post of Secretary in 2005.
He is the person who could be credited for conceptualizing the idea which opened the doors of various martial arts tournaments to the practitioners of Kuttu varisai.
